Songs from Matthew

This is the fortieth entry in a series on Songs from the Books of the Bible.

Southern Gospel songs focus on many of the highest themes known to mankind—songs of Salvation, the Cross, the Resurrection, and eternity. But critics claim that they focus on these themes to the exclusion of other Biblical themes which are appropriate and perhaps necessary to address in song.

  1. Oh, my… :)

  2. Proof that Southern Gospel is by far a New Testament genre and ministry! Great work Daniel.

    • Thanks! There is certainly valuable material through the whole Bible, though, and I would love to see Southern Gospel pick up more great songs with Old Testament inspiration.

  3. “At Calvary” – The Collingsworth Family

  4. Wow, awesome list!! Another one that came is mind is “Thread of Hope” by Jeff and Sheri Easter from Matthew 9:20-22.

  5. Matthew 28 – Love Was In The Room (Booth Brothers)

  6. I was glad we got out of the
Minor prophets and into the New Testament so I could come up with some songs, but Daniel’s list is so long it about gave me a headache so I’m not even going to try…

    • Sorry about the headache! There will be plenty once we hit the epistles.

  7. Did I overlook “His Name Was John,” the Perrys tune?

    • That story does not appear in Matthew. :)

      • The story of John the Baptist does not appear in Matthew?

      • Well, the story of his birth and his naming, which is the core around which the chorus is built, and the song’s most specific references. :)

  8. Matthew 24 was a song done by the Inspirations as well as others and The last sunday by the Cathedrals had Matthew 24 as the recitation

  9. Kudos, Daniel. That list is impressive there’s just one song that immediately I realized was not on this list. “Something’s Happening” – The Hoppers/Mercy’s Mark :))

  10. Matthew 8:5-13 – What’s That for a Healer (BR&D)

More from the touching the garment story in Matthew 9: Touch the Hem (GC), Common Garments (GV), The Hem of His Garment (Perrys)

Matthew 11:28-30 – Come Unto Me (lots of folks)

From the water-walkin in Matthew 14: Between Me and the Storm (GC), It’s Only Faith (GC), Who Needs a Boat (KH)

    Matthew 18:11-14 – Here I Am (Hoppers)

Matthew 18:18 – Loose Him and Let Him Go (GC)

Matthew 19:16-22 – Poorest Man in Heaven (KH)

Matthew 24:40-41 – Are You Ready (GC)

Matthew 26:6-13 – Far Beyond This Place (GV)

  11. 10:29- I Can Trust Jesus (Collingsworth Family)

  12. A few I don’t think I saw

Go Tell It On the Mountain – Canton Junction
That Should’ve Been My Cross – Union Street
But for the Cross – LeFevre Quartet
I Knew It Was Him – Kingsmen (9:18-26)
A Cross Became My Saving Grace – Wilburn & Wilburn

    • Thanks! The reason Go Tell it On the Mountain doesn’t appear in Matthew is because the story of the shepherds doesn’t show up till Luke. :)

      • Well thats embarrassing as a PK. Just don’t tell my dad :D

  13. Ok, they came to mind real quick were Gold City “Nobody’s There”, and “There Rose A Lamb”

Now, how are you going to distinguish between the gospels? Probably 75 percent of these songs could fall under all three gospels. ;-)

    • Added – thanks!

I have cross-references for parallel passages in the other posts, as well as listing songs for the events that first appear in that Gospel.

  14. Just added “A Shepherd in Search of a Lamb” to Matthew 18:11-14.

    • Wouldn’t “I’m The Lamb (That The Shepherd Left The Flock For)” (Couriers, Booth Brothers) also come under Matthew 18:11-14? I’m kinda surprised you left that one off, considering that you wrote a “Song Snapshot” about it just a couple of months ago!

      • I wrote the song snapshot after I wrote this post. :)

  15. Sorry, I shouldn’t tease you, considering the great job you’ve done. This is an amazing list!

    • Not a problem! I just found it funny! :)

(Especially since I drafted both posts a while ago!)

  16. On What Album did The Hoppers ever record “Beautiful Star of Bethlehem”? I’ve looked at both of their Christmas Albums and didn’t see it.
    God Bless

    • Brandon they sang it on their 1981 request time album

  17. From Matthew 27:57-60, the greatest song ever written about Joseph. Of Arimathaea, that is. “He’ll Carry Me”…

    • I feel bad about that one – but I’ll admit, I’d feel worse if it didn’t take a month before anyone else thought of it!

  18. Matthew 8:23-27: Don’t Be Afraid (Cathedrals, Legacy Five) (also Mark 4:37-41, Luke 8:22-25)

    • Great one! Just added. How on earth could I have missed it? :)

      • Eh…it happens.

I didn’t think of it until it came up on Spotify today.

      • Yes; I still probably edit in one per week from somewhere in the Bible!
