Songs from II Corinthians

This is the forty-seventh entry in a series on Songs from the Books of the Bible.

Southern Gospel songs focus on many of the highest themes known to mankind—songs of Salvation, the Cross, the Resurrection, and eternity. But critics claim that they focus on these themes to the exclusion of other Biblical themes which are appropriate and perhaps necessary to address in song.

For how many chapters in II Corinthians can we find Southern Gospel songs addressing their themes?

  • II Corinthians 1:3: The God of All Comfort (McKameys)
  • II Corinthians 3:17: Where the Spirit of the Lord Is (Henry & Hazel Slaughter)
  • II Corinthians 4:8: Blue Skies Coming (Perrys)
  • II Corinthians 4:9: Anchor to the Power of the Cross (Hoppers)
  • II Corinthians 5:1 (also see Hebrews 9:11): Not Made With Hands (Gold City)
  • II Corinthians 5:1 (also see Hebrews 9:11): City Not Made With Hands (Perrys)
  • II Corinthians 5:1 (also see Hebrews 9:11): House Not Made With Hands (Poet Voices)
  • II Corinthians 5:7: Walkin’ by Faith (The Browns)
  • II Corinthians 5:7: Walkin’ by Faith (The Inspirations) (different songs)
  • II Corinthians 5:7: When Faith Steps In (McKameys)
  • II Corinthians 5:17: I’m In A New World (Happy Goodmans, Greater Vision)
  • II Corinthians 5:17: He Made a Change (Cathedrals)
  • II Corinthians 5:17: New Creation (Imperials)

  • II Corinthians 8:9: Oh, What a Trade (McKameys)

  1. Hi Daniel,
Just a thought from an old SG fan who reads lots of these email blogs, and Singing News, and whatever keeps me informed between local concerts, and the NQC, and don’t take this as a criticism, please.
Your series on songs from the Books of the Bible is probably the one I read less than any other one you
do. I am not opposed to the idea, but it just never grabs me like some of your other columns. These are just
my personal thoughts. I can’t imagine how you research to get your list, and that must take lots of searching. I can’t remember song titles, and many of the groups in your list, I’ve never heard of, but anyway, I really consider you a very astute writer, and love receiving your emails, so you don’t have to post this one in the comments if you think it is detrimental to those others who like this particular series.
Thanks for all you do for the Lord’s kingdom, and keep on keeping on! God Bless!!
    Bobbie

    • Bobbie, thank you for your thoughts! I’m sorry you don’t find it as interesting as the other columns, but I’m glad you do find the other columns interesting!

Thankfully, I do have at least some readers who do find it interesting.

Well, for whatever it’s worth, this series is wrapping up in May, so you won’t have to ignore them for much longer! :)

  2. And I’ll chime in and say, of all the series on this site, this is my favorite.

  3. Gotta be some from 5:17: “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.”

The only one I can think of off the top of my head is Vep Ellis’s “I’m in a New World”. I’m not sure who has recorded it…it’s in the redback.

    • Was it an oversight or does it not meet the criteria, but what about “He Made A Change” by the Cathedrals? It directly quotes that verse. I know you guys are huge Cathedrals fans, so maybe I’m missing something.

      • Perfect!

      • Great one! Should’ve thought of that one.

    • Good one, Brian! Greater Vision and the Happy Goodmans have both recorded it.

      • Ah, yes…the Church Hymnal Series, of course.

    • I remember Russ Taft quoting that verse at some point when he was singing a song with them Imperials. i may have to revisit to find out the name of the song. It was probably on an album, so that might take a while.

      • OK! No rush, but that would be interesting.

      • The song was “New Creation” from The Imperials’ Live, circa 1980.

      • Thanks, Steve!
