Ryan Seaton leaves Signature Sound

Signature Sound just announced that lead singer Ryan Seaton is leaving. He will be replaced by Karen Peck & New River’s Devin McGlamery. Haase’s announcement:

Dear Friends,

It is with sadness and regret that I announce the departure of Ernie Haase & Signature Sound lead singer, Ryan Seaton.

I thank him from the bottom of my heart for all his contributions. We wish Ryan the very best in his personal and professional pursuits, wherever they may lead him.

While one part of my heart is very heavy, the other half is uplifted by the news that Devin McGlamery, from southern gospel’s Grammy-nominated Karen Peck & New River, is joining EHSS as new lead singer! Devin has been lead/tenor for KPNR for the last five years, following a five-year career with the Dixie Melody Boys.

Devin’s debut with us will be on January 15, 2010 in Cincinnati, Ohio, at our “Dream On” concert featuring The Collingsworth Family – our first performance after Christmas break. We’re really thrilled to be headlining our own show throughout next year.

“To say I’m excited is an understatement,” said Devin. “Ernie and I have been great friends for years. I’ve always had a lot of admiration for him as a singer and as a person, and he has always encouraged me. Words cannot express how wonderful I feel about this opportunity for my career and my family.”

A native of Valdosta, Georgia, Devin is 27 and lives in Kinston, North Carolina, with his wife Karen Ham McGlamery and their children, Karlyn and Preston.

“I want to thank Karen Peck so much for everything over the last five years,” said Devin. “She let southern gospel music get to know the real me, and she let me be who I am. For that and many things, I will always be grateful. I’m really looking forward to the next part of my calling and my journey with Ernie and the group.”

I thank God for the opportunity to work with Devin and am grateful to Karen and Susan Peck for their graciousness. Please join me in giving a warm Signature Sound welcome to Devin, and keep Ryan and his dear family in your prayers!

As always, your support and understanding is SO valued and appreciated.

Ernie

Signature Sound had maintained a stable lineup for an impressive length of time, keeping the same four vocalists for five or six years.

Devin McGlamery is an able vocalist, and he certainly comes to the job with the right hair!

Eyes will be on Ryan Seaton to see where he ends up. Gold City would be a long shot but not impossible; the phrasing of their last press release, though, makes it sound like their lineup is pretty settled for now. If Tim knew that was in the works, chances are he would have held the press release for a few days.

Could he be starting his own group?

  1. Oh my goodness. I didn’t expect this but Devin is a good singer. I wish him, Ryan, and both groups the best.

    • I am so sad to see that Ryan won’t be with Signature Sound any longer. I just love him, he is a fine Christian singer. It will take me a while to get over this.

      • I thought so too at first. Devin is AWESOME though!

      • Yeah. What Josh said. :-)

      • I have tried to find out what actually caused Ryan to leave the group. I listen to him sing
PRAY FOR ME daily. His song helps me, a cancer
and Leukemia patient to get through each day.

      • Any reasons other than those stated in the press release have not been released to the public. He is currently singing with an excellent quartet he started, the Ryan Seaton Quartet, in addition to doing solo dates.

  2. Yeah… just got the email from Ernie a few hours ago… didn’t see this one coming. Maybe Bruce will leave and Ryan will join Gold City too?? LOL

    • I just revised the post. Looks like you beat me to the thought by a few seconds!

      • Am sorry to see him go. They had such a great sound together. [EDIT]

another question? Does anyone know if there is a soundtrack or backup music for a song that Signature sound dis called “ON THE OTHERE SIDE OF THE CROSS”. I have exhausted my resourses trying to locate a soundtrack. If you can help me, please contract me at
        (es-oldtimer@epix.net) Thanks

      • Rich, you can buy soundtracks for The Ground is Level, which that song comes from, at the EHSS store here: [EDIT, 6/7/12: Broken link removed.]

      • You might try the Statler Brothers web sit, they sang it first and it was written by Don Reid, lead singer and one of the brothers. It was first recorder on the Statler Broths Showtime CD. I love EHSS but I like the Statlers version better.

    • I got this email to and it is so sad!

  3. Does anyone have a clue about Karen & New River’s replacement?

    • i don’t know if kpnr already has someone in mind, but what about chris cooper? he’s available now. or even bring john darin rowsey back! he was great with new river! i also know from talking to him that tanner stahl with soul’d out quartet has always wanted to sing with them. it could turn out to be an interesting carousel if kpnr was to hire someone from another group. should be fun to watch tho! kind of like NFL free agency :)

  4. Wow, this is an amazing move. I think Devin will be perfect for the job with his youth and stage presence.

  5. I found it kind of interesting that Ernie was very vague about why Ryan was leaving.
I think that Devin is a very good fit for Signature Sound, he has the looks, the hair, and the stage presence to fit right in. I also think he is well qualified, I really liked him when he was with the Dixie Melody Boys. But once he went with Karen Peck and New River, he kind of was just a backup singer, which I found kind of odd. I often wondered if that bothered him, that he was very seldom featured on anything.
I am sure that once he is with EHSS, he will get a lot more exposure, which someone with his talent deserves.
It will prove interesting to see who ends up with Karen Peck and New River, and also to see where Ryan lands, if he indeed is staying in SGM.

  6. Woa. Didn’t see this coming at all!

So Daniel, just curious, but how many groups does this total out to that have changed their members in 2009?

Seems like every month someone else is changing.

    • That would be almost impossible to track, since one would have to define on a case by case basis where to draw the line between national, semi-national, and local groups!

      • I wish you could have seen my face when I read “local” groups. Really? lol.

Um… I think I’ll just click on the “Changes” tab and count them up instead. Or maybe I should rephrase the question and ask “How many group changes have you blogged about in the year 2009?”

  7. So what was that again … The 10 big stories of 2009 were all ironed out a week or two ago? :D

    • Haha! No kidding! :)

  8. My heart goes out to all the bloggers that have written their posts on the many changes of 2009. I thank God I am not a blogger.
Then I wonder, “Is 2010 gonna have as much turnover?”
    Here’s my 2010 change wishlist:
    1. Ronny Hinson joins New Hinsons (now just called the Hinsons).
    2. Eli Fortner joins the Inspirations
    3. DayBreak to finally get a tenor.
    4. Ernie Haase to start crediting his live band (since Wayne Haun does sing with them).
    5. Kingdom Heirs to finally get a lead/steel guitarist.

Could anyone imagine the Hinsons doing some of their old hits in a new CD?

    Genius at work.

    • What is this supposed to be? A wishist? That is a little weird!

  9. Better yet…. why not have Eric AND Ronny join the Hinsons…. now THAT would be just incredible…

  10. EH&SS as a whole get a lot of attention but Ryan Seaton is one underrated lead singer.

While I certainly wouldn’t mind seeing Ryan with Gold City…I hope Bruce is there to stay.

    • Just saw the video of EHSS doing “Than Came The Morning” with the new lead singer, Devin. He is good and will surely become as polished as Ryan. Why did Ryan want top leave EHSS anyway? They were a perfect blend.

  11. Ryan did a great job and will be missed by his fans. Anxious to see what his future will be…he’s a talented young man. Devin seems like a natural fit for EHSSQ.

    • Devin does a great job for EHSS but no one has the infectious smile that Ryan has. I really miss him.

  12. For you Hinson fans, Larry Hinson posted on Facebook that there was going to be a concert with himself, Ronny, Bo, and Yvonne doing some of those classic Hinson songs in the church that Larry pastors in Tennessee. That would be an incredible concert!

    • Yes it would be Greg…. I wonder where Eric fits into all of this? Once he left the New Hinsons, it’s like he’s been an outcast or something. Never hear anything about him. Only Bo….

  13. Didn’t see this coming. :( :( Sad….
at the same time I’m interested to see where Ryan goes and how Devin does, though!

  14. Eric’s doing solo work now. He has a website.

    Genius at work.

  15. I was totally shocked by this announcement. I came to love Ryan and he will be surely missed. I read on another forum that Ryan did a radio interview and he has no plans yet. I wish him the best.

  16. It was sure a surprise, but I’m not broken hearted over it. I think it could be a good move all the way around eventually. I’ve met Ryan several times at concerts and various things over the years and have gotten to know him and he is great and I know he’ll be missed. I sent him and e-mail via Facebook yesterday when I learned of the news and included that I hope we continue to see him in Gospel music. His reply was: “Trust me you will!! Please stay in touch so that I can keep you informed of what might be coming up for me!!!” It will be interesting to see where he ends up!

  17. While i’m sad to see ryan go…i’m happy to see devin get this opportunity. Like ryan said on his facebook and in the interview, he gives enough hints that he seems to have some direction.

    On the hinsons-

I would love to see yvonne, larry, weston (kennys son) and ronny do some touring…couldn’t get more hinsonish than that!

  18. True… but IMO, Weston isn’t nearly as good as Eric or Bo in the singing deptartment.

  19. I was sad when Devin left the Dixie Melody Boys; he is gifted with a great voice, and he has stage presence to boot. He was definitely an asset to the DMB! I am glad to see him getting back into a male quartet, and I believe he will fit well with Ernie Haase & Signature Sound. I of course am also sad to see a group change that has done so well for so many years with no personnel turnover, and will miss Ryan–but I wish him the best. I have enjoyed his contributions to both Ernie Haase & Signature Sound, and also to the Melody Boys Quartet. I am looking forward to more great quartet music in 2010–how about y’all? :-)

  20. I suspect that EH&SSQ will be much improved with Devin on lead.

  21. I will miss Ryan with Sig. Sound. He was great. Such a nice guy. Maybe he wants to just stay home a while with his beautiful wife and girls.
Karen Peck Gouch is an awesome person. Have known her for many years.

  22. I too was very shocked for what seems to be a sudden change. I like SSQ, but I must honestly say Ernie’s comment on the leaving of Ryan seemed a little vague and condesending. I wish all involved the very best, because at the end of the day these men are about spreading the good news of Jesus; at least I hope so. One last thing, I would like to wish everyone a very bless and prosperous 2010…

    Thanks, Whyne in Toronto

  23. I AM VERY SAD WITH THE NEWS OF RYAN LEAVING SIGNATURE SOUND. I REALLY LIKE HIM. HE IS ONE OF THE REASONS I STARTED BUYING SIGNATURE SOUND’S DVD AND CD. THE OTHER GUYS ARE OK, BUT RYAN HAS THAT APPEAL TO DRAW PEOPLE. TO SEE A YOUNG MAN SINGING FOR THE LORD IS REALLY GREAT. NOT TO MENTION HIS GOOD LOOKS TOO. I AM SURE HIS REPLACEMENT WILL DO WELL, BUT FOR ME IT IS A SAD END TO A BEAUTIFUL PARTNERSHIP. I DON’T THINK THAT I WILL BE BUYING TOO MANY OR WATCHING SIGNATURE SOUNDS DVD OR CD’S IN THE FURTURE. AFTER I GET OVER THE SHOCK OF RYAN LEAVING,MAYBE I WILL LISTEN TO THE NEW SIGNATURE SOUND. I WILL MISS YOU RYAN, GOOD LUCK AND MAY GOD BE WITH YOU IN YOUR FUTURE SINGING CAREER.

    • I agree with you. I lost there web sie when I moved. My comp was down and I just got back on OMG. Sad. My thoughts are with you Ryan.

    • What in the world is this? Is it German cause’ I don’t think that anybody can understand you. (:

      • Paste it into Google translator … if I remember right, it was Dutch.

  25. Ernie’s announcement didn’t give details…but he doesn’t have to. I appreciate the fact that he is respecting Ryan’s privacy and not broadcasting any details – whatever the reasons for his departure from the group.

People make career moves all the time – leaving one job and going to another. Businesses don’t issue press releases outlining the details of those changes…and we don’t expect it. So why do we put this expectation on our Christian performers to lay out publicly the details of their personal and private lives – yes, including the details of decisions pertaining to their career/job decisions and moves?

Refraining from even listening to the group with a new singer even before they sing publicly with that new member is rather like cutting off your nose to spite your face, isn’t it?
I’d say…listen to them and watch them a few times with the new configuration before writing them off completely. The other guys are still there – don’t they deserve some fan loyalty as well? Or are we now telling Doug, Tim, and Ernie that they don’t matter, and are not worth our consideration? Hmmmmm…something to really think about.

    • Excellent point. Well said.

  26. SURE DID HATE TO HEAR THAT RYAN SEATON WON’T BE WITH EARNIE HAASE AND SIGNATURE SOUND ANYMORE.MY SISTER AND i ARE GOING TO FRESNO THE 28TH AND BAKERSFIELD THE 29TH. SURE WANTED TO SEE ALL OF THE GROUP TOGATHER AGAIN.WE’LL MISS RYAN SO MUCH. SURE GLAD WE GOT TO TALK TO HIM AT THE RADISSON HOTEL LAST FEB. THE CONCERT WAS WONDERFUL. We Love All Of You.
    Donna and Joyce Lisenbery

  27. We were at the 1/15/2010 concert here in Cincinnati (Princeton-Pike Church of God) and Devin did an awesome job.

Miss Ryan – hope all is well with he and his family!!!

    Jean

  28. Time marches on.
    Change is inevitable.
Sometimes for good and sometimes for bad.
Just remember…Jake Hess left the Statesmen and later formed the Imperials…and later the Master’s Five.
What talent we would have missed if change had not come.
    Jackie

  29. And Jackie you make a very good point..makes it kind of hard for me to be upset about ryan leaving…and wait on the good that might come out of it…

    • Is anybody going to the Renewed and Reloaded tour at Westside Church?

  30. The concerts at Fresno, ca.and Bakersfield,Ca. Jan. 28th and 29th were wonderful. Can’t wait for you to get close to us again so we can go see you.We love all of you.Devin did great.Of course Ernie, Doug, and Tim are always great.Love the pictures we took while you were there. Lotsa Love Donna in Las Vegas, Nv. and Joyce in Pixley, Ca. We,re sisters and best friends.

  31. I feel very depressed. I just discovered EHSS by accident on the TV Gospel hour. Fell in love with the sound, the music, the charisma. Then, just discovered the inevitable….a change in the lineup. Sorry….but it will take me awhile to get over this particular change. Why do great things come to an end so soon? I guess I am too old to accept change easily anymore. I feel cheated that I wasn’t aware of these 4 men earlier in their career so I could have enjoyed them longer.

    • Fortunately, that lineup has been well captured on numerous CDs, live concert DVDs, and Homecoming CDs & DVDs, so even though you may not be able to enjoy them in live concert, you can certainly continue to enjoy them permanently. :)

    • Yeah I definitly agree with you even though I have been watching them for a while I stil am extremely sad that Ryan had to leave, but I’m excited for Devin to join! (:

  32. I am just hoping Ryan left to pursue bigger and better things for God. I can’t imagine him leaving because of a problem.

Just like Guy Penrod, he left to pursue a solo career. So far he is doing well. I pray both guys will be very successful.

  33. I am sad that Ryan Seaton left:(

  34. ME TOOOO!!!! ):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):

  35. Just found out that Ryan left. So Sad. He was my favorite and I loved his voice. I’ll be waiting to see him elsewhere. The new sound and look of Signature Sound is different…just not the same. I won’t be purchasing anymore CD’s.

  36. This thread is a little old, and a lot of people have said their say on this issue. Still, I’d like to set my own thoughts down here, because it’s a delicate topic, and I think a lot of people I’ve seen on various forums and threads I’ve seen are making some mistakes in the way they’re viewing this. So for anybody who chances to read this, here goes…

First, the musical perspective. Personally, I always thought Ryan was rather underrated, but still not the strongest vocalist in the group. I think the other voices were more distinctive, so he ended up getting kind of over-shadowed. Pity, because he’s really very talented in his own right. I will miss him, but I still can’t help feeling how much worse it would have been if it had been Timmy who went, or even Doug. That’s not to say I’m glad he’s gone, just my .02 as far as vox are concerned.

Regarding the reasons for the split…I don’t have the answers, and I don’t need to have the answers. Ernie hasn’t shared and probably shouldn’t share any more than he already has. I will say this though: I did listen to the interview Ryan gave on Daniel Britt shortly after the news broke. It pains me to say it, but I have to agree with the other people who said they could tell from Ryan’s demeanor that he had been fired. To me, he sounds unhappy and uncertain. I’m glad that he’s getting something going now, but I got the strong impression that at the time, he didn’t want to leave, and he found out with everybody else.

I also got the impression that Ernie himself hated to do it (I suspect he called in to the station with encouragement for Ryan on the day of the interview because he felt bad and wanted to make sure Ryan knew he was there for him). Ernie’s taken a lot of flak through this whole thing, but honestly, I don’t think he deserves one bit of it. Regarding the shutting down of the comments thread on the blog, I would remind people that we don’t know what all was said in those comments. I see no reason to assume that they were all nice, sweet, “Love you Ryan, good luck” comments. There could have been anger and maybe even profanity. There could have been people demanding that Ernie give them a “scoop.” I can fully understand his finally having enough and shutting things down under those circumstances.

Yet like everybody else, I feel the awkwardness and even the pain of the whole thing. Like everybody else, I ask the obvious question, “Why?” Obviously, Ernie had reasons I don’t know about. Again, I don’t want to be hard on him—it’s tough when you’re the manager and everything is on you’re shoulders. But I will miss Ryan. Best of luck in his future endeavors at this point. I wish him only good. He seems like a genuinely nice guy.

One last thought—regarding Devin, I have to be honest and say that I think Ryan is a better singer. Still, the other guys have welcomed Devin into the group, and I see no reason why we shouldn’t do the same. People are free not to attend any more concerts or buy any more CD’s if they don’t want to, but I would say that it’s certainly ridiculous to do so simply as a form of protest because Ryan’s no longer with the group. Myself, I’m willing to give Devin a chance. I will probably always prefer Ryan’s voice, but I suspect Devin may improve with experience. He’s obviously thrilled to be with the group and seems like a nice guy. Once again, I wish him only good.

So there are my thoughts, for what they’re worth.

    • Should be “your shoulders.” Ouch. Where’s the edit button when you need it?

    • Ya know, I see more and more ways I agree with you. :)

      • :-D Thank you! Oh yeah, and you can, you know, feel free to say that anywhere else I post something, LOL!

  37. I’m still morning the loss of Ryan. [EDIT]

    • Don’t you think that’s water under the bridge? Let’s move on folks. Devin’s doing just fine.

  38. Hi . my name is Rodrigo
i am from Brasil and my question is: why Ryan left the EHSS?
    thanks

    • The press releases that went out stated that he left to pursue a solo career.

  39. Sad that Ryan left EHSS. He fit in perfect. That move hurt EHSS very bad.I[...] If there is shuffling in groups, there are fans lost. [...] Please what fans you can save but I’m gone.{I do like the rest of the group tho. We’ll see.

  40. Yeah Ryan was like my favorite on the Signature Sound and I’m disappointed that Ryan left and am sad, but Devin is doing just as well as Ryan did and would be!
