Thanksgiving Gaither Homecoming taping: Artist List

A few days ago, I mentioned a post from Courtney Collingsworth that they would be at (now) yesterday’s Thanksgiving Gaither Homecoming taping. I’m hearing that the regulars were all there, as well as a few occasional visitors. (A list of known attendees is below.)

At least one guest, though, was there for the first time: Original Gaither Vocal Band tenor Steve Green posted this on Twitter yesterday:

Had a fun day at the Gaither Homecoming Video shoot. My first one. What great folks. So much music in one room!

In a recent interview with Wes Hampton, we discussed the fact that Green invited current Gaither Vocal Band members Hampton, Michael English, and David Phelps to appear on his recent project. It looks like the invitations went both ways. As Southern Gospel has moved into the musical territory occupied by Inspirational during the 1980s—and as ever-more-contemporary sounds in CCM have taken that genre farther away from that musical territory—hopefully these collaborations will introduce Inspirational music fans of that era to our genre.

  1. I believe Ronnie Milsap was also there yesterday. Mark Lowery has a picture with him on his blog and someone I know who is there posted on facebook that Ronnie was at the taping.

    • Who is that?

      • We’re going to have to get you more, lol.

      • I only have a limited amount of time and energy, and I choose to expend that time and energy on Southern Gospel. :)

  2. A blind country singer from the 70′s and 80′s.

  3. I think the Martins were there… I saw Jonathan in the background of one of Gerald Wolfe’ photos.

    • Updated. It’s amazing what just a few people looking around can find out in this Internet era! We might approach a complete list before long . . .

      • Ya gotta love this internet thang! LOL

I would assume that Ivan Parker was there because he ALWAYS IS, but I can’t confirm it…. i’ll look around and see if I can find anything. Don’t you just love research?! lol.

      • Yes, I do love research!

  4. Marshall Hall attended as well, according to his Facebook posts. :)

    • Thanks! I hadn’t noticed those posts. The list is updated now.

If you notice anyone else mentioning being there, if you let me know I’ll update the list.

      • Sure thing!
        Via Twitter:
madithetaff: get to have “big news” sung to me again tomorrow- somehow, this never gets old:) d’aww (May 10)

        madithetaff: 12..hours..of..gospel.. (May 12)

So I guess that means Russ Taff showed up. :)

      • Ladye Love Smith posted some photos on Facebook from the taping. Looks like the list can now also include:
Reggie and Ladye Love Smith, Charlotte Ritchie, (and Greg Ritchie too), (at least) Dean and Kim Hopper, a Mrs. (Reggie?) Saddler, Taranda Greene, the Isaacs, Terry Blackwood, Billy Blackwood, Jason Crabb, Squire Parsons, Mylon LeFevre, Wesley Pritchard, Gordon Mote, Gene McDonald, Lisa Daags, Gale Mayes, Angela Primm, the McGuire Family, Bill and Gloria Gaither (duh!)and Kelly Nelon’s husband. :)

Song selection: Brooklyn Collingsworth, Wesley Pritchard and Reggie Smith, “Sometimes Alleluia.”

Here’s the link to the photo album in case you want to sniff out any more I may not recognize :) : Gaither Video Taping May 11, 2010

      • Wow! That really takes the list up to the next level. Thanks!

  5. According to their facebook page, Dailey and Vincent were there also. Anyone who has any faint admiration for bluegrass will love them. For those who don’t know, Christian Davis is their bass singer.

    • Interesting! I saw a bluegrass group setting up in a blurry background on one picture, but couldn’t tell who it was from that. I love Christian’s voice, so I’m sure whatever they did sounded great.

      • They are definitely worth the time if you ever get to hear them. They do a lot of quartet singing and are known for their vocals.

  7. Names to add: Wintley Phipps, Gary McSpadden and Kevin Williams

Emily Sutherland’s recap of the taping

There were a bunch of people I didn’t recognize in this
Gaither photo album from the taping. They may actually already be named, but I don’t know their faces.

    • Thanks! Added.

This is a lot of fun . . . we should do this more often for the Gaither tapings.

      • I’m in! :) I’m surprised that none of the photos uncovered yet have Steve Green in them.

      • It seems as though there were quite a few artists there, and a number of them – take all of the Collingsworth family except Kim & Brooklyn, or Lauren Talley – haven’t been in any photos that I’ve seen.

      • I have seen pics of Kim and Brooklyn. Courtney posted them, I think.

      • I’ve seen them too; what I was saying is that (even though I know they were there) I haven’t seen any pictures of the others yet. That was just as an example; I haven’t seen pictures of Lauren or Debra Talley, either, but I did see a picture of Roger in the background on one of the photos.

  8. Does anyone else find the complete absence of Signature Sound a bit unusual??

    • That is a little unusual… They usually have just like 1 or 2 traditional quartets at most tapings… And L5 was the one this time seemingly… Its possible that it is just a simple matter of logistics…

      • They may be trying to avoid the putting either group in a competitive situation…. maybe. That can happen when quartets get together ;-)

    • I don’t think it’s terribly unusual given that EHSSQ have taken this year to branch out and do solo tours exclusively.

  9. Via Mark Lowry’s photo collage, Ben Speer.

  10. Jeff Hawes from Karen Peck and New River, said he was attending the taping.

    • Yes, and I saw him in pictures (along with Karen and Susan, of course).

  11. Oh! I forgot! Gus Gaches mentioned on FaceBook that Larry Ford was there :D

  12. Boy, JayTee, Naomi et al, I’m starting to think we are the “Southern Gospel Master Sleuth Posse: Homecoming Lineups Cannot be Hidden from Our Sight” gang! :)

    • Roflol! I think you nailed it! :D

    • Haha! Love it! :D

  13. Gus also said on his Facebook that Him Larry Ford and Davids Phelps sang as a trio on part of a song… The song I believe was “I will Sing Of My Redeemer”

    • That would be phenomenal!

Ford’s rendition is good solo, but add two other tenors . . . wow.

    • (Claps hands)
If it’s anything like what I’m hearing in my head, it’s superamazingfantasterrific! :)

    • I agree.

  14. OK, I couldn’t resist. Now that I know four, I started a second list, this one of the songs that we know were taped.

    Additions, anyone?

  15. I wonder what Guy Penrod sang? Looked like he and Michael English were doing a duo.

  16. I’ve made a list for you, Daniel! This was fun! It’s something akin to the Where’s Waldo thing. See which artists you can discover at the Homecoming taping! After look at artists’ Facebook/Twitter and photos on Gaither Community, here’s a list of people I spotted that y’all haven’t listed yet.

    The Nelons
Rory Rigdon (Gaither Sound Tech and Comedian)
    Woody Wright
    Stephen Hill
    Kimberly Mote (Gordon’s wife)
    Janet Paschal
    Allison Durham-Speer
    Faye Speer
    Calvin Newton
John Bowman (Becky Issacs’ husband, perhaps his new group was playing. Not sure.)
    Les Beasley
    Jim Hill
Michael Sykes (if Tanya was there, I did not spot her)
    Jim Murray (former GVB member)

    • Wow! I thought I saw Jim Murray and Jim Hill, but the pictures were blurry enough that I wasn’t sure. I’m amazed at how many you came up with!

      • I grew up watching the Gaither videos, so I would know those people anywhere. I was up SO late last night because I couldn’t fall asleep and saw this post while checking the blog on my iPhone, so I decided to do a little research! Haha!

      • Awesome!

(The research part, not the sleeplessness part!)

      • Haha! Thank you!

  17. Via David Phelps’ blog:
The GVB sang four numbers from the new unreleased and unnamed (due out in August) album, two of which were backed by strings.

Apparently Bill also asked DP to sing “Bring Him Home,” a song from “Les Misérables.” (Link is home video quality)

Via Michael English message board post:
To all of you who are wondering how I am. I am doing fine. I’m still not traveling with the guys but will soon. God IS faithful. I went to be a part of the new video that was shot on “Thanks” that will be out Thanksgiving. I didn’t sing but but I stood proud and tall to be standing with my guys again. I love you all so much and please continue to pray. Satan is doing everything he can to tear me apart. EVERYTHING. Just pray…..

    • Fascinating! Interesting that English was there even though he couldn’t sing.

      • It doesn’t surprise me… if he wasn’t there, Bill Gaither would get a billion letters from old ladies saying “Where is Michael?!?! He’s not singing with y’all anymore???”… and we don’t want that, now do we? LOL. :D

    • Not unnamed. It’s entitled, “Greatly Blessed,” and it is due Aug 10th.

      • I stand corrected. :)

  18. They have already started production on this project… It will be released in September or October as a Two DVD set…

    • Yippy! I’m glad they always do 2 DVDs :D Maybe the Gaches/Phelps/Ford trio will show up ;-)

  19. According to Brooke Collingsworth, it is set to be a Cracker Barrel special.

  20. I was told it would release sometime in September. It will be great to see all the folks together again. I love it when they have the huge group. If anyone comes up with some of the song list that would be a bonus!

  21. Steve Green posted the following comment on his facebook account:

Steve Green — The theme was ‘Thanksgiving’ to be released in the fall. I sang “Total Praise” from the new CD and “Great Is Thy Faithfulness” in Spanish.

    • Thanks! I just updated the song list with that info.

  22. Does anybody know if Ivan Parker, Jessy Dixon, Johnny Minick, Sue Dodge, Donnie Sumner, Mike Allen, or Joel & LaBreeska Hemphill. These are the only other regulars that I can think of that should be there but have not been listed!

  23. I just added Bob and Jeanie Johnson and Ann Downing to the list.

  24. Another song for you Daniel! According to Emily Sutherland’s Formspring site, the GVB (with Wes Hampton presumably taking the lead) sang “He Is Here.” (I do not take credit for asking the question)
Since David Phelps mentioned they sang four songs total together that were from the upcoming album, I’m guessing that one is one of the ones on the new album. :)

  25. Sweet! In a culture that seems to have almost forgotten that Thanksgiving *exists*, it’s refreshing to see the Gaithers make Thanksgiving the centerpiece (as it were :-D) of a Homecoming video.

I’m also thrilled that Steve Green is making an appearance! I just saw him in concert recently. Wow. What a class act, and people, the guy can still raise the roof, believe me.

Interesting that L5 was invited but not EHSS. I agree that it makes sense though. After all, L5 hasn’t been featured nearly as much (if at all) on other Homecomings, whereas EHSS have been practically ubiquitous in that context of late. Plus, they’re doing more stuff on their own now anyway. So it seems like an appropriate time to give L5 a chance to shine. I LOVE Gus, the new tenor, and I think he’s their best ever. Can’t wait to see the trio he does with Larry Ford and David Phelps.

Did somebody say they were doing “Great Is Thy Faithfulness?” Double sweetness!
